Last week I turned Charlie's show on in the staff lunchroom at my workplace & danced! Can you believe after doing this show 2 years I just now realized our lunchroom picks up 95.9fm? We obviously get along well in the music department, so I was stoked to listen up!

But that's all in the past, man!

I saw 17 shows in September, and last week I saw 7 shows in 6 days, capping it off with 2 nights of Weber Brothers & BA Johnston - two incredible live acts! Today is one of my favourite days of the year.....Cyclovia! There was so much happening this weekend, my blood was red hot from the hours I spent on the pavement.

I took full advantage of the free stages this weekend, which only means I saw two of them: the Cyclovia stage in front of the Leg & the Sherbrook St Fest stage late saturday night. I have a quota I've gotta fill for local bands before I leave to go travelling in October & they keep surprising me with bands I forgot about! Blue Sky Addicts only play about once every 9 months, and I managed to catch them accidentally Sunday afternoon! Great songwriters! Great show! As a tip of the hat, I kicked the show off with them.

Blue Sky Addicts - Stuntman
The Weber Brothers - The One For You For Now
The Crooked Brothers - Sweet Lemons
The Avett Brothers - Laundry Room

Zrada - Give Me Liquor
Royal Canoe - Dumb Waiter
The Cat Empire - Beyond All
Murder By Death - King of the Gutters Prince of the Dogs
The Bottoms Up Blues Band - Got to Make a Change

Kicked it off with local pop & ended with the blues, with some weird fusion of garage rock, international flavours, bagpipes & folk throughout there. Sound like Only Cowards!

I was so overwhelmed by what I found out east. Found a second home in Nova Scotia & St John's - especially St John's. Eager to go back. The music community there is very tight knit & the whole city stinks of what I love about Winnipeg. Older older, and with more singalongs and fish.

Apologies to Charlie for hauling anchor & having a time without her in the past couple weeks, and subsequently walking around like I own the place during this show. Next week there'll be more of us & less of my ego. And this week I hardly even stuttered!

Monday, August 9, 2010

Let's go backwards chronologically.

Lotta folk music. The more I thought about it, the more I started thinking that if folk music is 'for the people', wouldn't punk music have alot in common with it? In fact, you could almost say that any form of music is folk music.

In this episode, I am obsessed with the creative genious of both Ted Leo & Greg MacPherson. They both completely blow me away. Despite that I hate the comparison, they are both highly skilled songwriters, and I finally got to see Greg release his first album in 4 years on April 10th. I also worked merch for him & rocked out 1500$ worth of it! Hell yeah!
And afterwards, I went to the Op Ivy tribute at the Albert.

Sunday March 28th et al...

April 1st:
Jocelyn here. I'm sitting at the U of W on my last day of classes. Got nowhere to be, so I'm doing nothing but listening to music (catching up on heavily recommended items) & digging through all the dirt to make a complete listing of upcoming concerts for the next couple months. Right now I'm listening to one of the marching bands Mama Cutsworth recommended to me - Youngblood Brass Band. Oh man! They are so good! Like, hiphop with a marching band base.

Anyway, I've got alot of playlists to get off my chest. I keep doing things like leaving my flashdrive at the station & going out of town, but mostly just forgetting. I'm lame.

This March 28th show was really good. We played alot of good stuff & it flowed really well.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - The Mighty Sparrow
Millencolin - Fox
Murder By Death - Foxglove
The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
Mos Def - Habitat
Grand Analog - Spaces & Places
The Herd - Ray Of Sun

Greg MacPherson - Travelling Style
Bliss N Eso - Zion Bash
Quagmire - Cocaine Shakes
The Balconies - Elephant Lump
We Are The City - Peso Loving Squid
The Cat Empire - The Wine Song
Less Than Jake - Gainesville Rock City

(Two sidenotes: we finally got to play the Wine Song. And we played 4 Australian bands, though we meant to play Oka as well. The more I thought about it, the more I was thinking it would be really easyto play upwards of 8 Aussie bands if we threw in Xavier Rudd, Blue King Brown & the like. I friggin love Aussie music!)
(Also: NEW TED LEO!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEIIIIII!!!!)

March 21st was my personal St Patrick's day show. I was away the week before celebrating in Boston. My friend Jess & I have seen the Dropkick Murphys about 3 or 4 times before, sometimes here & sometimes at Warped Tour in Minneapolis. These were still some of the best shows we've ever been to! We now know more about them than ever before, including which ones were in AA, which ones are Canadian & where exactly their pub is located. (Though we couldn't tell you the way home from the pub!)
This is that (followup) show. My head was still spinning.
(Also the night before this show, the day after I got back, I saw The Real MacKenzies at the Albert. I figured we could probably play only the new Live DKM album plus The Reals & still fill all our new & Canadian quota!)

Dropkick Murphys - Intro
Dropkick Muprhys - The State of Massachusetts (I get chills..)
The Real MacKenzies - The Skeleton & The Tailor

Dropkick Murphys - Bastards on Parade

Come all you losers you bastards and cheats
Vagrants and barflies down on the streets
Follow this path to salvation Vindication awaits!
We're marching on East Broadway streets tonight!!

The one thing I remember about this March 14th show, was that Charle$ & I let one slide with The Narcycist, some rapper who sounded interesting & raps about controversial topics, who we also had never heard before. We were really surprized. I thought there'd be alot of f-bombs, or n-bombs. But nothing! Plus it was really good!

The Burning Hell - Grave Situation Pt1
Scott Nolan - All Over Now
Motion City Soundtrack - My Favourite Accident
CR Avery - The Boxer Who Just Returned From London
The Crooked Brothers - Sunday Dress
Flight of the Conchords - Friends
Gomez - Where Ya Going?

B A Johnston - The Manatee is my Totem Animal
Hot Water Music - Better Sense
The Bottoms Up Blues Gang - Everybody's Cryin Mercy

On this one, March 7th, Charley was back home for the weekend, so my friend Jess cordiallyhosted along my side. We ended up doing a big ska segment, forgetting several choice bands, and not documenting most of what we played. Shit.
The first several songs were meticulously selected. I was so proud of my short playlist.

Astronautalis - The Story of my Life
Hilltop Hoods - Fifty in 5
CR Avery - Hell of a Hotel of Harm
Alkaline Trio - Take Lots with Alcohol
Riverboat Gamblers - Steer Clear
Against Me! - So Much More
Motion City Soundtrack - Back to the Beat
Streetlight Manifesto - Point/Counterpoint
The Sidewalks - A Better Way
The Afterbeat - People Before Profit
Big D & the Kid's Table - My Stupid Mind
The Toasters - Don't Let The Bastards Drag You Down
Idlers - Jiggerman
Subcity - Too Loud For This City
The Elixxers - Begin

Finally! All caught up on the ol' playlists. I'm tired & hungry now... This week will probably be Charlie solo because of Easter & the demands placed on me by my freakin family. Someone tell them Easter is on Monday.

Secret theme: Breakup songs! Blah... It's been an anti-valentine's week.
I had been hinting towards a secret theme to Charlie this week. (Basically by telling her we were having a secret theme.. One really can't be more vague than that.) Last minute as I ran into the studio for the opening minutes of the show, I told her all about it over the sounds of Miesha & her Spanks.

This is the episode where Jocelyn is a bummer, then gets picked up merely by the thought of music.

Miesha & The Spanks - Heart Knows Better
The Vandals - My Girlfriend's Dead
Fake Problems - The Tabernacle Song
Hollerado - Got To Lose
Los Campesinos! - Romance is Boring

FUNDRIVE 2010: It's Gonna Happen!

FunDrive is our annual fundraising event, where we demand and actually need your support - No scam involved. It's important that people who care about the station support the station, so we can keep this thing going with no strings attached.

Our show goal was 750$. Last year I almost broke 500$, so I thought that was alright between Charlie & me. We almost didn't make it, but then ended up with almost 1000$! That was so cool! So exciting to get so close to 1000$! We definately doubled last year.

Here's the quip of a playlist, between talking about how great we are:

The Angry Dragons - Hex
Bloodshot Bill - Paradise
Devandra Banhart - Can't Help But Smiling
Buck 65 - Wicked & Weird
Los Campesinos! - I Warned You: Do Not Make An Enemy out of Me
Subcity - Temper
The Spy From Cairo - Blood & Honey
Ultra Mega - Juicy/Big Poppa
John K Samson - Heart of the Continent
Mason Rack Band - Who Do You Love?
Children of Bodom - Looking Out My Backdoor
JACKSON
Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - When We Swam
Every Time I Die - Wanderlust
The Burning Hell - Old World
Cat Empire - In My Pocket
Cat Empire - The Car Song

So Charlie & I sung, like we said we would. We had a friend of ours against a wall for pledges a couple weeks back & she said she'd do it if we sang that duet of Jackson by Johnny Cash & June Carter. It went alright I thought. Or at least, I was alright. I was the one I was worried about, so no problem then. Har har!

So we raised 985$! If you're reading this & are inspired to pledge, there's still time! FunDrive goes till Friday the 12th. There will be people taking your calls all day everyday at 774-6877. You can also pledge online at fundrive.ckuw.ca. FunDrive is the best!

January 24th, 2010

Charlie & I agreed that our lives are missing something... Something that keeps us up all night & makes us find & celebrate life & bounce off the walls... Oh yeah! Punk music! It is much too infrequently we end up at the Albert yelling at each other over the sounds of walls collapsing saying "We need to do this more often!" We need to liven things up a bit round here. This is our punk/metal show. It's too bad some really good bands don't put out anything recorded.

Happy New Year!!!!!!

Alright, don't get mad. I know you missed us last week. While Charlie & I aren't exactly snowbirds, we both got the chance to fly south this year! Be honest, you would if you could! I tried so hard to pre-record my show before I left last saturday, but then my bags were stuck in Chicago & my passport was missing... I was a trainwreck for a week, and had more pressing matters on my mind.

Here's a list of: 4 of my favourite bands I fell in love to in 2009, 2 songs about Louisiana, 3 of my alltime favourite bands, 5 bands I had never heard before I played them on air, and 2 local favourites. You can decide which is which. I always want to kick off the new year by discovering the bands I should have heard of last year.
